Musicians and singers today expressed concern over the possible extinction of Murchunga, a Nepali folk musical instrument that has prehistoric roots.

A ten-day training programme on Murchunga, afolk musical instrument, concluded here od Tuesday. The programme was organized by the Nepali folk musical instruments Museum, Nepal Heritage Society and Manamaiju Cultural Society .

Talking to the Himalayan Times, Dhurbu Raj Khadga, said that the training progamme had the purpose of training those interested in Murchungas and particularly those working in both private and government owned recording studios .

''Not a single person from Radio Nepal and the Royal Nepal Academy turned up for the programme,'' he said. He pointed out that while recording songs in the studio, it is impossible to find musicians who can play Murchunga. ''If Murchangas and Murchunga players are available in the studios, it would be of great help,''khadka added.

''Murchunga used to be considered only as an instrument that created effects but Suresh Chandra Pradhan proved in the training that it can be used for creating tunes as well,'' he said.

There are around 265 extinct Nepali music instruments said, Ram prasad kandel, trainer of the function. He pointed out that there used to be tradition of learning Murchunga while going for cattle herding in villages but now it faces the danger of extinction.

Suresh Chandra Pradhan, Murchunga trainer of the programme, stressed on the need to impart knowledge to the younger generation on musical instruments facing the threat of extinction. Murchunga is the smallest musical instrument that I have ever seen, he added.

With a title Music for peace, Neapli folk Instrument Museum organized the 11th sumadhur Lok sangeetik yatra –eleventh folk musical tour- at a function in Bassantapur Durbar square today.

Begun with the tune of traditional folk musical instrument sarangee, various folk musical instruments were played and artistes sang traditional folk songs at the programe.

The central attraction was the folk musical instrument arbajo, which was played by khim Bahadur Gayak. Sixty –six years old Gayak singer from pokhara is well known for Arbajo playing and music composition from the instrument.

According to Gayak, arbajo is played along with sarangee. ''we regard arbajo a male and sarangee a female. Without the combination of these two, the output of music will not be attractive.''

He said the arbajo is played during the festive occasions, and in the marriage and Bratabanda –sacred-thread ceremony- celebration.

Arbajo is an instrument, which is similar to guitar and is also played like guitar. It is made from the wood of khira –a type of plant- and the instrument consists of four strings that can produce four tunes –raag-sa, pa, sa, sa.

It is believed that the instrument was handed down by saint Bhrama Bharat to the human being during the satya yug-an ancient era-. And in those days the instrument was used to deliver messages from one place to another.

Youth's Gayak, who learned the instrument when he was only eight years old is not happy with the modern attraction drawn toward the modern musical instrument. ''Youth these days do not bother to learn the age-old traditional instrument,which is our identity and that need to be preserved,''

With an aim to preserve the instrument Gayak is planning to provide training to the young people in pokhara. ''we have opended a musical training center in pokhara through which we will impart training to all the interested music lovers,''he said.

Alos in the programme Bhumati Gurung performed a Gurung language song. And ksthamandu Dance and cultural center presented the folk dance, Mitra Devkota and Dhan Bahadur Ale performed folk song 'simal Bhuwa.' Raju Dhakal and Binda wasel also sang a folk song at the programme.
