NFMIM was founded in the year 1995. With a view to collecting, preserving and glorifying the Nepali folk Musical instrument. There are more than 100 ethnic groups in Nepal, each with their own culture and traditions to mark every occasion from birth to death with music. People organize various musical ceremonies and play the musical instruments in accordance with their traditions and rituals. Our study concludes that more than 350 kinds of musical instruments are found in Nepal .At the same time many groups such as Gaine, Damai, Badi have been adopting these folk musical instruments as their way of life and have been playing them professionally.
We feel that these musical instruments are the property of the citizens of Nepal from the high mountains to the plains of the country should know about the importance of all these invaluable lasses. Unfortunately, modern heavy instruments over shadow traditional instruments, so we believe there it is an urgent need to inform our new generations of the specialties of all these musical instruments. The decreasing number of folk instrument players and the gradual disappearance of the musical instruments have prompted us to collect instruments and preserve their tunes, history and, methods of playing. We also believe these musical instruments run through the veins of all proud Nepalese citizens.
OUR ACTIVITIES
NFMIM has been performing the following activities since it establishment.
1. Research into the names and origin of the folk musical instrument and their association with respective communities. We have identified 300 types of the folk musical in Instruments and their association with mon than 100 ethnic groups and communities so far.
2. Collection of more than 165 folk musical instruments from different parts of the country.
3. Identification of teachers and the origins of those folk musical instruments, which and on the verge of extinction.
4. Organization of various festivals for musical instruments. On such occasions we exhibit and play rare folk musical instrument and introduce the general public to all those instruments .
5. Monthly introductory training on at least one folk musical instrument.
6. Fortnightly musical journeys of melodious typical Nepali folk music and dance with a motive 'Folk Music For Peace.
7. Exhibition of the collected instruments through out the week from 11a.m. to 4 p.m.
8. publication of ''BAJA a bulletin that includes the interviews and articles on musical instruments, their method of playing, history etc.
ONGOING PROGRAMMES
The museum intends the flowing programs for the fulfillment of folk music and musical instruments. Research and identification\ explanation of the instruments, which have so far been ignored .
1.Identification of players of these folk musical instruments.
2. Organized of folk musical festivals in different parts of the country.
3.publication of the history of unusual and ancient musical instruments and biography of the players.
4. Publicity of Nepalese folk music and musical instruments in other part of the world.
5. Development of the Nepalese citizens to be able to play at least one folk musical resource center.
